What it does: Sage ERP X3 version 7 is heavily focused on mobile computing, with access to the company's mobile apps built in as a standard feature. According to Sage, the new Web interface -- built on HTML5 -- is designed to be more intuitive and collaborative, allowing for personalization and support for multiple browsers. The improved search feature is also being touted as a time saver. Additionally, the updated suite can now be integrated with Microsoft Office.
Why it matters: Sage is advertising version 7 as a complete overhaul of the ERP X3 product to better support business initiatives. The update specifically targets midmarket organizations, with functionality designed to aid with three goals typical of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs): getting more customers, increasing revenue and reducing operational costs.
Version 7 includes improvements to existing modules, such as extended traceability in areas such as quote to cash and order to payment, enhanced warehouse location management and faster automation for recurring invoices. Flexibility is something Sage has emphasized in this version -- specifically, more flexible definition of sales kits, and sales document personalization for delivery and returns. Version 7 also allows for more user control over inter-company transactions and how that data is shared across the organization.
What users say: Vacuum Engineering & Materials (VEM), a Santa Clara, California-based manufacturer of physical vapor disposition materials, is a longtime Sage customer. Its nine-year relationship with Sage allowed the company to go live with version 7 on April 28, before the product was available to the general public. Implementation took three months, according to Stephanie McConnell, the company's CFO.
"With Sage, their upgrade team was very organized and responsive. We spoke at least on a weekly basis," McConnell said. "The most time-consuming part was just testing all the components. It was very smooth."
The biggest -- and best -- change for VEM is version 7's new mobility options, said Michael Petzing, IT Manager. "Having real mobility is huge," he said. "Now we can just wake up in the morning, look at the Sage landing page on our phones, and make business decisions. It's much more available for people working from home, as well."
"Version 7 is easy to read and fits better on mobile devices," added McConnell. "The interface is much more user-friendly, versus what we saw in earlier versions."
Pricing: Sage ERP X3 version 7 costs roughly $1,167 per user. A common manufacturing scenario is approximately $35,000 for 30 users.
